Oil seals are rings made of various soft, non-metallic materials that are used to prevent leakage of liquids in hydraulic machines. In order to prevent wear from friction, hydraulic machines have a gap between the rotating shaft and the housing; oil seals are used to prevent fluid from leaking from this gap. They serve a dual purpose: both to retain the oil and to keep contaminants from entering the system. Oil rings can come in a variety of designs, materials, and sizes to fit every need.

An O-ring is a loop of elastomer with a round (o-shaped) cross-section used as a mechanical seal or gasket. They are designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface.

Bonded seals are metal washers with rubber inserts for use in high-pressure applications. The washer resists the bursting forces and limits the deformation of insert, which is self-centralizing and bonded to the washer’s inside diameter (ID). Most bonded seals consist of a rectangular washer and a trapezoidal rubber insert. The insert is vulcanized to improve material properties such as hardness, strength, and elasticity. As captive assemblies, bonded seals can be used in applications with thread undercuts. They are often used in place of copper washers in hydraulic and pneumatic connections that are subject to extreme pressures.

The role of the wiper seal is to prevent the ingress of dust and dirt or other foreign bodies, therefore extending the working life of the seal it is protecting. Types include: Nitrile, Nitrile metal cased, Polyurethane, Polyurethane metal cased.

Gaskets are used to prevent fluid or gas leaks by providing a barrier between two mating surfaces. The gasket must be able to maintain a seal under pressure and temperature changes. A number of different gaskets are available: pre-cut compression (flat or extruded style), formed-in-place, and cured-in-place. Some gaskets and gasketing can also be used to shield against electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI).

Circlips were developed over 60 years ago as a cost saving alternative to fastening such as machined collars on shafts or washer and pin assemblies and still offer the same benefits of a single fastening mechanism by reducing material waste and the number of components. However, today there are many variations to the basic Internal and External types; developed out of the special needs of the consumer for various strength and design characteristics.

Rivets are specific, headed, usually non-threaded fasteners that are beaten or pressed into place to secure two or more items together. Rivets are cylindrical mechanical fasteners capped with a flanged or forged head on one end. Rivets have different shaped heads, including domed, flat, or countersunk.
